Top 10 Must-See 2014 Movies

2014… it’s going to be a great year ahead. There are so many movies to look forward to – originals, sequels and even reboots. We have compiled a list of the top 10 movies you should be keeping an eye out for:

10. Jupiter Ascending

The Wachowskis will be bringing us another blockbuster this year (well, we hoping it’s a blockbuster). Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) has DNA markings that threaten the Queen of the universe. A genetically engineered hunter (Channing Tatum) is sent to Earth to track her down. Sean Bean also stars in this Sci-Fi Adventure. Scheduled for release in India on 01 August 2014 (USA release 18 July 2014).

09. Robocop

This is a reboot is definitely something we have got our eyes on this year. Why wouldn’t we, the original is a masterpiece for its time. We were excited when we first heard the rumors and then what got our attention was the director attached to it: Jose Padilha. He is the Brazilian director that brought us Elite Squad and its sequel The Enemy Within. Both movies were mixed with heavy action and suspense. So he’s already knowledgeable on how to get on with this movie. We just have to wait it out and see what he delivers. Hoping for him to steer away from the original and bring his style into the movie. Scheduled for release in India on 14 February 2014 (USA release 12 February 2014).

08. Transcendence

The movie is Wally Pfister’s directorial debut. Who is he? Pfister is the regular collaborator (as cinematographer) with Christopher Nolan.  So we definitely keen to see what he can do by himself. And when you have Johnny Depp staring in the movie, it’s hard to pass it off. The plot is interesting: a scientist (Johnny Depp) uploads his consciousness on to the computer. He now has power that is beyond the wildest imagination. The movie also stars Rebecca Hall & Kate Mara.  Scheduled for release in India on has not been made yet, we expect it to be around the same time as USA (USA release 18 April 2014).

07. Captain America: Winter Soldier

Another sequel by the Marvel Studios that will have a tie in to the much awaited Avengers: Age of Ultrons. While we all still debate over the right choice for the role of Captain America – Chris Evans is not the right fit. The question on everyone’s mind is, will he hold his own in the sequel (Captain America the First Avenger was quite disappointing but tolerable in the Avengers). That being said the story development is what we are all keen on. Many of the actors like Samuel L. Jackson & Scarlett Johansson reprise their roles; we also have Robert Redford joining the cast. Scheduled for release in India (& USA) release 04 April 2014.

06. Need for Speed

Is this a mix of Fast & Furious with Transporter? Whatever it, it’s got our attention! The plot is simple, street car racer was framed by a wealthy associate. He’s done his time and now wants revenge; his ex-partner fears this and has put a bounty on his head. We suspect a good story as it’s written by Geroge Nolfi, who gave us Ocean’s Eleven & Ocean’s Twelve. But whatever may be the story line, we are just keen on some insane car stunts – its Need for Speed. Scheduled for release in India on has not been made yet, we expect it to be around the same time as USA (USA release 14 March 2014)

05. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

We’ve been waiting for this sequel since we saw The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Not that we knew there would be, we just wanted one. This reboot series has our hopes riding really high. Check out our thoughts on the trailer breakdown. Scheduled for release in India on has not been made yet, we expect it to be around the same time as USA (USA release 17 July 2014)

04. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

This movie is going to out-do everything the first part did. We are 100% sure, not because we are such big fans of Spidey (which we are) but have you seen any trailer that good? Seriously, look at all the trailers. This one definitely sets the benchmark for all Superhero movies. Extremely kicked to see Jamie Foxx (as Electro) & Paul Giamatti (as Rhino). Scheduled for release in India (& USA) release 02 May 2014.

03. X-Men Days of Future Past

Did you watch the last scene (after credits) after The Wolverine (2013) movie? If you did, you too would have been eagerly waiting for this next installment of the X-Men. There are so many great things in store for this one. To begin with we have Bryan Singer coming back to the X-Men Franchise. We have a merger with the X-Men First Class actors: James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart playing Professor X and Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen playing Magneto. And to top off, Wolverine’s character gets more screen time than the original comic book (no second guessing there). Isn’t this great? Scheduled for release in India (& USA) release 23 May 2014.

02. Godzilla

This is the reboot of the year. They got the fundamentals right – Godzilla is not a Tyrannosaurus Rex. This should simply want you to watch this movie. Enough said. Ha ha. This definitely is a fun-filled action that we would definitely want to watch at the IMAX.  Also, eager to see what Bryan Cranston will bring to this movie. Are the Breaking Bad days finally behind him? Scheduled for release in India (& USA) release 16 May 2014. May is definitely going to be a super month!!!

01. The Hobbit: There and Back Again

The concluding part to the Hobbit Trilogy, Peter Jackson will want us wanting a lot more (as he did with the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King). The sequel Desolation of Smaug out did the first but left plenty for the finale. The only question I have for Peter Jackson is “what’s next?”, we definitely need to something go on with. Scheduled for release in India on has not been made yet, we expect it to be around the same time as USA (USA release 17 December 2014)
