Heavily inspired by the success of Street Fighter 2, MK was released in 1992 and featured ground breaking digitized graphics, immersive sound and unparalleled video game violence. You could chose from 7 characters to go head to head with another player, or take on the CPU in a ladder style format
What differentiated Mortal Kombat from other fighting games was the introduction of never before seen features – like a dedicated block button and fatalities. After winning the final round, fighters would execute a secret command called a fatality, where the winning player would unleash a brutal set of moves that resulted in exploding heads, ripped spines, hearts and limbs…and even burning flesh to the bone.
These fatalities were not easy to pull off, and the journey to master them was long and hard… that’s what she said
The game was so violent, especially it’s fatalities, that it spawned many years of hype and controversy…and it helped pave the way for the Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB.
Ultimately, Mortal Kombat is one of those games that re-defined the fighting genre, and it spawned Many versions of the last 20 odd years. While there have been many successful sequels, like Mortal Kombat 2, 3 the rebooted Mortal Kombat in 2011 and it’s follow up sequel in 2015 Mortal Kombat X, it’s the very first Mortal Kombat that will be remembered as the one that paved the way for success of the franchise.
Of course it also there’s also the 2 Mortal Kombat Movies…which you may want to forget.
