Why Watch Dogs is already My Game of the Year

Every once in a while there comes a game that breaks out of a genre and defines it owns amazing concept, story and settings. Games like Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, God of War, Gears of War, Dead Space – the list can go on. Each of these aforementioned games brough something new and unique to the game – whether it was story, the environment, controls, gameplay or even graphics. Watch Dogs is in that league.

While this is not exactly news, Watch Dog made it’s debut at E3 2012 and since then has been the buzz around the gaming world. It’s being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and is to be released in 2013 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The Watch Dogs universe is centered around what is called a ‘Information Warfare’ theme. It’s revolves around the use of hacking and surveillance. The game’s protagonist Aiden Pearce can use any device tied to the city’s central operating system (ctOS) as a weapon against it.During the gameplay demonstration, Aiden is seen jamming cellphones to serve as a distraction as he enters a vanity art exhibit, tapping a phone call to retrieve information about his target, and manipulating traffic lights to cause a large pileup designed to trap the target and his thugs. The player can also access information from the ctOS on the NPCs they encounter, including information on demographics, health, and their probability of violence. Combat utilizes a combination of stealth components, along with the mechanics of a cover-based third-person shooter. The E3 demo also demonstrated co-op play, as focus shifted to a second character referred to as ”Bixxel_44″ (controlled by another player) following Aiden’s successful killing of his target, who was given orders to protect Aiden by intercepting the police trying to catch him.

With all that said, you can judge for yourself by watching the trailers below. For me, the concept, the open-world and the ability to use any information in a mannaer that puts the Matrix to shame, is something I’m really looking forward to! I’d love to see a movie made out of this too! Just imagine the possibilities!
