As the time has come to move on in life and make way for better consoles, we pay tribute to our previous generation consoles for the number of hours (and unearthly hours) of entertainment that they have provided us. On the same note let us also give our respects to the two most iconic characters of the previous generation from PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
Kratos (God of War series)
If you have played God of War, then you know why he made it to this list. Ruthless, strong, well-built and dangerous, Kratos can definitely make even the Gods tremble. Don’t get fooled by his muscular body – he can move faster than the speed of light and with his excellent maneuvering skills can bring his foes to their knees in no time! .
His mean look with scars running down his face makes him one of the most unforgettable characters from the gaming fraternity.
Kratos is featured in Ascension, Chains of Olympus and the God of War series (I, II and III). You will even see him outside the God of War series, most notably in Mortal Kombat. In 2008 he was released as a downloadable character ‘Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds’, in 2009 he was seen on ‘Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny’, in 2011 he made a character appearance on ‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’.
Featured in Uncharted 1-3, he has been called the mascot of PS3 game console and for good reasons. With a distinct personality, he is different from other personalities on gaming consoles that appear as caricatures or cardboard cutouts. His human like feel is what makes this character more appealing than others. And the fact that he is super intelligent with a bounty of knowledge puts him on the ‘top best gaming characters’ list. His sarcastic quips and taunts keep you entertained and amused throughout the game.
What we like best about him is the fact that we can relate to him. Though he is this strong guy who beats up his enemies, shoots them and wards off danger with his intelligence, he is also the guy who gets shot and falls down injured. His casual attire a jeans and half tucked shirt is also something that feels very real.
This treasure hunter and action hero is what every guy dreams to be. And the ladies love him too!
The face of Halo series, Master Chief is ironically a faceless robotic super soldier. The only thing you get a glimpse of are his eyes. A man (or not) of few words, this character gives out the vibe of a strong, silent person. A person who during gameplays becomes you – the advantage of him being quiet is that you can apply your personality to him. You pretend he is you or the other way around – either way thanks to him you become the cool, suave, dignified professional. So cool infact that he doesn’t even care if he doesn’t get the girl. This quiet indifference with slight touch of arrogance is what makes Master Chief such an appealing character. And the best part? He is the good guy trying to save the human race.
We have seen him and loved him in a series of science fiction first-person shooter video games: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4. He even has cameos in other Halo media, including Halo: Reach, Halo: Ghosts of Onyx, The Halo Graphic Novel, Halo Legends and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.
If you have played Gears of War, then you will agree with us when we say that Marcus Fenix is one of the most iconic characters from the Xbox 360 generation. In fact he was voted as the 19th top video game character of all time by the readers of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition in 2011. A giant, almost hulk-like with a foul-tongue this badass character just comes stomping everything on his way and chainsawing his way through – for gamers like us he provides with the best action possible! We can feel the adrenaline rushing through us when this game hero charges at his enemies.
The entire human race depends on him; he is the last hope. Just the fact that he is considered for such a monumental gigantically huge task makes him the absolute Mr. Badass! A war hero sent to prison for a rash decision is back to save the world! Marcus Fenix is seen on Gears of War series 1-3.
And finally don’t you all just love his head gear? We know, we do!
Who doesn’t remember this adorable character from those childhood video games? He may not be a hardcore gamer’s favourite, but one can’t deny the fact that he is definitely one of the most iconic characters ever in the field of gaming. An enthusiastic pudgy and short Italian plumber with a funny moustache, he is mostly seen not fixing pipes but saving the world and rescuing a princess. Don’t be fooled by his size; he packs in quite a punch. He is Wii’s flagship character and though there isn’t much to talk about his personality (which is almost zero), he somehow is the most sought after gaming character. Maybe it is the unknown that pulls us to him or maybe it is his funny yet adorable looks.
But it is no surprise that he is one of the most famous cartoons and he has been featured in many games like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party: Island Tour, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario Golf, Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Strikers, Mario Tennis and then there were the Olympics series – Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and finally Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games which is based on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Mario is featured on more than 200 games! He is definitely a legend!
An extremely popular character, the Donkey Kong is someone we have all grown to love. Originally featured on Mario as his opponent, today Donkey Kong has a game all to himself where he is protagonist (bad guy turns good is definitely a hit!) who fights against a clan of crocodiles, the Kremlins.
Donkey Kong’s trademark is his use of barrels against the enemies. Not only does he use them as weapons, he also uses them as vehicles, furniture and lodging. This character is someone who like Mario has appealed to every age group.
And we love him too! He has been featured on Super Mario Bros. (his debut), Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land (I, II and III), Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, DK King of Swing and many more…
You know what they say – “It’s on like Donkey Kong!”
Besides these characters, we also have to mention characters like Nathan Hale, the American Soldier from ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’, Nariko from Heavenly Sword and Ryu Hayabusa, the protagonist from the ‘Ninja Gaiden Sigma’ series (also featured in the Dead or Alive series). Let’s not forget other great heroes like Commander Shepard from Mass Effect, Balder from Too Human and Frank West from Dead Rights. We certainly cannot leave out Samus Aran from Metroid Prime and Squall Leonhart and Tidus from the Final Fantasy Series. All great characters! The last generation was certainly gave us a lot of memorable characters
