The Unreal Engine 4, originally developed and marketed by Epic Games, announced today that their proprietary technology will take an entirely different approach to its business model using a subscription-based system. Instead of paying for a license, which typically goes in a hundreds and thousands of $, will be available for a flat fee of $19 per month, plus (here’s the real kicker) – 5 percent of gross revenue from any commercial product.
This certainly opens up new opportunites for game developers. It’s a fair pricing it would seem, considering 5% can be construed as being quite high, however, given the prowess of the Unreal 4 Engine, this is quite the way to go. The engine is still available as a custom-negotiated license, for those not looking to go the subscription model route
