‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ New Mutants Breakdown

We take a quick look at some of the new characters that will be featured in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Not only that, as a bonus, we give you a quick run down of who they are and what role they will possibly play in the movie. Let’s get started:

First up is Bishop. Bishop will be portrayed by actor Omar Sy in the movie, and going by the picture, he’s looks awesome!

Bishop is essentially from the future, and was a cop, a mutant cop, if you will, with Xavier School Enforcers, now called, Xavier’s Security Enforcers. There are several story lines on how he came to be part of the X-Men, but the most prominent one is where he time travels to the past, i.e. the 20th century, and joins the X-Men. He travels back in time during a battle with Trevor Fitzroy, a mutant criminal, he possesses the ability to absorb energy from human beings and use that energy to open time portals. Of course, there’s a lot more to how he came about to meet them, which will require another post by itself. But on joining the X-Men, Charles Xavier places Bishop under the tutelage of Storm.

Role in the movie:

There’s a good chance that Bishop will be positioned as an antagonist, given the many run ins with the X-Men he’s had in the past and future. He’s going to be a key player in with all of this ‘Days of Future Past’ tag and time travel.

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing will play Blink, but from what we can see in the image, she’s a very different version from what’s portrayed in the comics.

The most popular version of her origins is from the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ story-line. Her real name is Clarice Ferguson and she was born in Cartusia, Bahamas. Her purple skin complexion revealed her to be a mutant at birth. Her parents accepted this fact but feared their daughter would not be accepted by the local population. When Clarice was four, the Fergusons moved to Miami, Florida, in the United States. They hoped Miami would be home to a mutant population where an older Clarice would be able to socialize.

As per the Age of Apocalypse story line, Professor X is killed before he even forms the X-Men. This is the universe in which Blink was born. The super mutant named Apocalypse takes over Miami, where Blink moved, and is captured by one of his men. They perform experiments on her to enhance her powers. That’s pretty much how Blink came to be with her powers. In a later version of the same story line, Blink and Colossus’ sister are both inmates at Apocalypse’s prison, where they were sexually abused by Sugar Man (another mutant). They are eventually rescued by Sabertooth and Weapon X (Wolverine). Here it is shown that she grew up with the X-Men, and eventually became an important member of the X-Men. It is later in this timeline that they meet with Bishop who sets forth a course of events that prevented the death of Professor X, eliminating the Age of Apocalypse.

Role in the movie:

She’s going to be part of Xavier’s team; and she and Bishop will probably cross paths setting forth the chain of events that lead to all of this. It is possible that they will make the shift from a sentinel-dominated future, like they showed in Wolverine: Origins; to an Apocalypse dominated one. How they tie it back will be something to see.

Evan Peters will portray the character in the 2014 live-action film X-Men: Days of Future Past, while another adaptation of Quicksilver will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. For now, we focus on the Even Peters version.

Quicksilver’s (Pietro) history is fairly clean and un-muddled. He is the son of Magneto, the twin brother of the Scarlet Witch (Wanda), and the paternal half-brother of Polaris. He’s initially been an antagonist to the X-Men, but eventually ends up leading them as per the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline. Here the story is a little different; Pietro and his sister Wanda were living a quiet life in the Transian countryside with their adoptive family when their true father came back into their lives. Magneto informed them they were mutants and offered his children a place by his side. He told them of his goal to teach the world about the now emerging mutantkind and of his dream of mutants and humans living side by side. Magneto and his children were on their way to doing that until Apocalypse emerged.

Role in the movie:

Crossing timelines is something that is always going to be tricky. It’s going to be interesting to see how they connect the dots here, but our sense is that Quicksilver, will be the bridge between the X-Men of the present and the past, and eventually leading them. Look for some romantic sparks between Storm and him as well.

Actor Adan Canto will portray Sunspot in the movie; which is a good thing as far as Sunspot is concerned, because he was slotted to make an appearance in the X-Men: First Class movie, but was written out.

Sunspot, originally known as Roberto da Costa, is the son of a  wealthy Afro-Brazilian businessman Emmanuel da Costa and a White Brazilian archaeologist Nina da Costa. There’s a very strong father-son dynamic present here, which we won’t get into, but you should know that his father was a very self driven man, who went from servant boy to millionaire and eventually a powerful political figure. Sunspot’s powers emerge when he takes a brutal beating while playing soccer. It manifests itself rather suddenly, thereby turning him into a creature of solid black solar energy. He mostly rolls with the New Mutants and X-Force. Apart from all of this, he’s super smart, has a keen sense of business, evidenced through a multi-billion dollar business and is an Olympic class athlete. His weakness is that he needs to stay charged in the sun to be most effective. Pretty much leaving him vulnerable at other times. Over the years he certainly does get stronger and eventually reaches a level where more super-human than human.

Role in the movie:

Currently unknown, but if one were to speculate, with such a huge cast, we can’t help wondering how big Sunspot’s role will be in ‘Days of Future Past’. Although Sunspot is most often associated with the ‘X-Men’ and ‘New Mutants’ he’s also been linked to ‘X-Force’ – a group of mutants who have recently been confirmed to receive their very own spin-off movie. But could Sunspot be a subtle link between the two? For now, we’ll just have to wait and see… but we get the feeling this won’t be the last we see of him.

Warpath will be portrayed by Boo Boo Stewart, and his character is probably one of the more powerful ones in the movie.

His real name is James Proudstar, and he was originally known as Thunderbird II and then as Warpath. His brother was the original Thunderbird, but after he died, he joined the villain Hellions group to get revenge. He later reconsidered his views and became a longtime member of the militant X-Men offshoot X-Force. After X-Force’s disintegration, Warpath joins the Mumbai branch of the international mutant agency X-Corporation. His new team is a mix of old and new friends: Feral, Sunfire, and Thornn. He stays there for a while, helping to save Professor X’s life.

Role in the movie:

Currently still a question mark, but one can see this is looking more and more like a set up for X-Force. There could be subtle references to his brother’s death in some of the past timelines they cross over into, but to us, Warpath will probably not have a significant role, but will be more of a set up for bigger things to come.

Other Characters:

There you have it folks, our quick round up of the new mutants that will be featured in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past movie. The Move is set to release on May 23rd 2014.
