Last year, Blumhouse brought Five Nights at Freddy’s from the video game world to the big screen, and, unsurprisingly, it became a box office hit. With a sequel already lined up for 2025, lead actor Josh Hutcherson recently gave some hints about what audiences can expect in the follow-up.
In a conversation with Esquire, Hutcherson addressed the first film’s lack of fright factor for some viewers, promising that the sequel will deliver more scares. He also mentioned that the second film will lean into the quirky, over-the-top nature of the games, while maintaining the grounded feel of the original. According to Hutcherson, they worked hard to balance expanding the world of Freddy’s with keeping the characters relatable and believable.
The upcoming movie will also feature a new batch of animatronics, as is the case in each new installment of the game series. While Hutcherson kept specific details under wraps, he teased that there will be more and “different” animatronics, and that the stakes will be “much bigger” this time around. Fans can expect the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s to expand significantly, and Hutcherson believes they’ll be thrilled with what’s in store.
Blumhouse had previously indicated plans to turn Five Nights at Freddy’s into a long-running franchise, and while Hutcherson’s character, Mike, could play a central role in future films, the actor isn’t sure just yet. However, he shared that he loves the role and working with director Emma Tammi, noting that the series has plenty of potential. For now, though, the focus is on delivering a great second film.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set to be released in theaters on December 5, 2025.
