Hold on! before you dismiss this as just being another failed attempt at ressurecting the Mortal Kombat franchise – take a closer look. For retro gamers like myself..and many others, Mortal Kombat 1,2 and 3 was THE ultimate fighter across platforms – right from the digitized characters to the brutal fatalities, MK marked the era of violance in fighting games where none dared venture. Ofcourse there was Street Fighter, Tekken, Samurai Warriors and the like, but none came close to the intensity and brutality displayed by the Mortal Kombat franchise. Then as we all remember there were several MK games which came out trying out new stuff like different figting styles and weapons, but somehow the charm of the original series was lost in translation.
But now, with the new Mortal Komat game announced at E3 – I’m still unsure what it’s call. Mortal Kombat – The Breakdown?? – I don’t know yet, but what makes this game so special is that it goes back to its roots – simple straight forward fist fights with powers ofcourse and all the classic areas that weren’t there in the earlier series. No weapons, no alternative figting styles and here’s what’s so awesome….all the uber cool combo’s that worked in parts 1,2 and 3 are back…not the mention some wicked new fatalities!!
We don’t have much information on the release dates, but yes, it’s this year and it’s on the PS3 so far, possibly on the Xbox 360 as well.
Here are some screen shots of the game – check out the video as well from IGN
