Rogue One will be getting the IMAX treatment and re-released in select theaters, and features an exclusive look at the upcoming Andor series on 26th August. The first Star Wars anthology series film, Rogue One serves as a prequel to the original 1977 Star Wars film, A New Hope, and details the Rebel Alliance’s first real victory against the Empire that is referred to in the debut film’s opening crawl. Set a week before A New Hope, the film focuses on this group of rebels, who in their mission together, steal plans of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire’s ultimate weapon.
About a month ahead of Andor’s premiere on Disney+, this re-release of Rogue One serves as a great refresher for Star Wars newbies and long-time fans alike, as the film segues into the upcoming series. The theatrical return also marks a historic first for Disney and Star Wars, as Rogue One‘s return marks the first time that Disney is re-releasing a film to promote an upcoming Disney+ series. While Star Wars spin-offs like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi presented opportunities to bring a number of the Star Wars films back into theaters, the studios obviously decided against it.
With Andor hitting Disney+ on September 21, it will be exciting to see how this re-release of Rogue One fares, as well as how it will impact the anticipation and success of the upcoming series.
